Tilt & Recline Rehab Shower Commode for Advanced Positioning & Caregiver Access
The EZee Life Model 170 adds full backrest recline to the tilt-in-space positioning of a standard rehab shower chair — making it the right choice for patients who need both postural support and extended recline for tone reduction, comfort, or clinical access. Like all EZee Life chairs, the rust-proof aluminum frame goes directly into the shower, rolls over a toilet, and functions as a standalone commode. At $999 it is a significant step up from a basic shower chair, built for patients with more complex positioning needs.
What Makes the Model 170 Different: Tilt Plus Recline
Most rehab shower chairs offer tilt-in-space only. The Model 170 combines two independent positioning systems:
- Seat Tilt (0–13 degrees): The entire seat and back tilt together, keeping hip angle constant. Used for pressure relief, tone reduction, and stabilizing patients who tend to slide or shift in the seat
- Backrest Recline (90–111 degrees from seat): The lower back reclines independently from seat tilt, opening the hip angle for deeper relaxation, perineal care, or catheter access
- Upper Back Angle: Fixed at 15 degrees posterior to the lower back position for consistent head and neck support
- Lower Leg Support (90–50 degrees): Legboard adjusts to support the lower leg in a range of positions coordinated with seat and back positioning
This combination gives caregivers significantly more access and control than a tilt-only chair — particularly for patients who require perineal hygiene, wound care, or catheter management during bathing routines.
X-Style Headrest
The Model 170 includes an X-style adjustable headrest — the smaller end of the X sits at the bottom to cradle the neck where it meets the base of the skull. The arms of the headrest can be flexed inward or outward to provide more control or more freedom depending on patient needs. The angle of the entire headrest is also adjustable. This level of head support is essential for patients with limited head or neck control during bathing and hygiene routines.
Shower & Commode Functions
- Shower use: Rust-proof aluminum frame — roll directly into a roll-in shower for caregiver-assisted bathing
- Commode use: Padded seat includes a removable key-insert. Remove it and the seat becomes an open horseshoe-style commode seat with the included pail underneath
- Rolls over toilet: Frame rolls over most standard toilets for toileting without transferring the patient to a separate commode
Flip-Back Arms & Transfer Access
The padded armrests flip up and back completely out of the way, staying raised when fully extended. This gives caregivers unobstructed lateral access for transfers, bathing assistance, and clinical procedures — a critical feature when working with patients who cannot assist with transfers.
Safety Features
- Side-release seat belt: Depress both release tabs simultaneously to unfasten — prevents accidental release while keeping intentional release simple for caregivers
- Adjustable removable anti-tippers: Required when the chair is tilted back — prevents rearward tipping during positioning
- 4 locking swivel casters: All four wheels lock for stability during transfers and bathing
- Single lever tilt release: Simple one-handed tilt control for caregivers
Footrest & Legboard
- Adjustable swing-away footrest and legboard: Swings away completely for transfers
- Footrest length: Infinitely adjustable from 14" to 20" for precise lower leg positioning
- Footrest hanger angle: 60 degrees
- Flip-up footplates: Fold up when not in use
- Hard rubber wheels: All casters are hard rubber — not plastic — for durability and floor protection

Model 170 vs. Model 155/190/195 — Which Is Right?
Both are EZee Life tilt-in-space rehab shower commodes. Here's how to choose:
- Choose the Model 155/190/195 if the patient needs tilt-in-space positioning, comes in 15", 18", or 20" seat widths, weighs up to 300 lbs, and self-propulsion (24" wheels) is a consideration
- Choose the Model 170 (this page) if the patient needs both tilt and backrest recline, requires the X-style headrest for additional head/neck support, or needs caregiver access for perineal care or clinical procedures during bathing. Weight limit is 286 lbs, one seat width (18") only
Who Benefits Most from the Model 170
Ideal For
- Patients who need both tilt and recline for tone management or comfort
- Patients with limited head and neck control requiring the X-style headrest
- Caregiver-assisted bathing where perineal or clinical access is needed during hygiene routines
- Home care situations with roll-in shower access
- Patients who cannot safely sit upright without postural support
May Not Be the Right Fit If
- Patient exceeds 286 lb weight capacity
- Patient needs a seat width other than 18" — consider the Model 155/190/195 in 15", 18", or 20"
- Patient is able to self-propel — the Model 170 is attendant-propelled only
- Tilt-only positioning is sufficient — the Model 155/190/195 is a lower cost option
